Research Notes

In 1998 the following article was published on the English origins of the Clarke family:

  • Christopher Gleason Clark, THE ENGLISH ANCESTRY OF JOSEPH CLARK (1613-1683) OF DEDHAM AND MEDFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS in NEHGR vol 152 p 3-23[1]

and updated in 1999

  • New England Historical and Genealogical Register, vol. 153 no. 2 (April 1999): 180-182 $subscription required. Colborne Origins and Clark Revelations, by Christopher Gleason Clark. [2]

This is *THE* State of current research.

Earlier works are discussed and completely refuted. The Clarkes of Dedham were the children of Thomas Clarke of Wesgate and Mary Canne. Please see the article above. The Clarke family pedigree is outlined for the first time.[3] [1]

Biography

Mary Canne was born about 1580 in Old Buckenham, Norfolk, England, probably the daughter of Thomas Canne and Rebecca Plowman.[1] (the cited source notes that only the first name "Mary" was visible and that the register was damaged).

Marriage 18 Oct 1602 Banham, Norfolk: Thomas Clarke to Mary Camit. [4]

Children of Thomas Clarke of Westage and Mary Canne include:

  1. Thomas Clarke bp 1 APR 1604 Banham, Norfolk, England DEATH 1 JUL 1656 in Banham, Norfolk, England
  2. Rowland Clarke bp 1 MARCH 1606 Banham, Norfolk, England DEATH 02 FEB 1638 • Dedham, Norfolk, Massachusetts arrived 1637 in Dedham, removed to Medfield. He came from Banham, Suffolk; England. He had *NO* children[2][3] [1] The children normally given him were actually his siblings.
  3. Rebecca Clarke bp 26 AUG 1610 Banham, Norfolk, England DEATH 1 JAN 1680 Medfield, Worcester, Massachusetts
  4. Joseph Clarke bp 11 APR 1613 Banham, Norfolk, England DEATH 6 JAN 1684 Medfield, Norfolk, Massachusetts,
  5. Mary Clarke bp 12 MAR 1614 Banham, Suffolk, England
  6. Elizabeth Clarke bp 23 Jul 1620 in Banham, Norfolk England and died 22 Dec 1683 in Medfield

disputed:

  1. Priscilla Clarke almost surely born 1621 Banham, Suffolk, England DEATH 12 AUG 1692 • Dedham, Norfolk, Massachusetts[5][6] [1][7]

Clark's article, NEHGR vol 152 source page 14, quotes town records, saying "At Dedham "our sister Clarke widdow being taken with strange fits of ye Collicke 21 day 3 month 1642 died in the evening that followed". [1]

Research notes

It is possible that his mother Mary was the Mary Clarke who was admitted to the church at Dedham, MA on Mar 1,1642, and she may be the same who was buried there on May 22,1642 or 1643. However, that may refer to Mary (Hobart) Clarke, wife of a Rowland Clark (Rowland has been mentioned in the past as a possible brother of Joseph, but this is probably not the case, as Joseph's brother Rowland who died in 1638 had no known wife. Of note is that there is no widow Clarke mentioned in the Banham assessments of 1641.)

Good day, I am thinking if her eldest child was born ca. 1604 then she was probably born later than 1570 unless 30 years is a standard for a "generation." I should think she would have been married off in her early 20s if not younger back at that time, Yes? No?

From what I understand, the identification of her parents is based on a 1570 christening record. Unfortunately, the link to that record on FamilySearch seems to have been misplaced, but if that's the reason for her birthdate here, then we shouldn't change it without a better source coming to light. It wasn't entirely unheard of for women to marry a bit later at this time.

Perhaps someone with access to the NEHGR article on the family could expand on the question.

Hi Ashley, without a good primary source I would never dare to change a date; I leave that to those who have researched the matter more throughly than I. I am actually over on ancestry doing a family tree for a friend (I ran out of my own family so now I do others for fun. I'm totally addicted). I will nip over to wikitree when I get stymied, since there are so many dedicated and well-trained genealogists working on this endeavour.

Yes, that's what I love about this place: all the far better researchers than myself, like Brad, working on the same tree. I've learned so much since I've been here. And we just improved the profile for my tenth great grandma here thanks to you, so thanks for nipping in here. :)

Ashley, you and I may have been posting at the same time. The christening record was of 1580 as noted on page 14 of the NEHGR vol 152 article cited in the profile. There were three partial "Mary" entries in Old Buckenham for 1579/80, that transcription is available here https://play.google.com/books/reader?id=i18VAAAAQAAJ&pg=GBS.PA8&hl=en

Other children of Thomas Canne appear (for example Thomas Jr in 1578 on the prior page). So it seems "about 1580" and "most likely one of the three Mary's was a daughter of Thomas Canne" may be about the best we can do for now.

We may have. :) I was just repeating what had been (apparently inaccurately) copied from the article in her profile. Thanks for checking the original!

You are exactly right Alycia, the premier source for this (NEHGR vol 152) actually states she was born about 1580, so not quite sure why 1570 is in the data field. I'll update it.

Must have just been a typo. If you're doing this a lot things all the dates etc tend to get confused.

Needing some insight here.

Her husband died in England. I've seen promoted that she migrated with her children (in profile of her husband). Brad says below that she apparently migrated between 1638 and 1641. I see in the bio (research notes by M. Cole) that she may have been the Mary Clarke who became member of the church at Dedham in 1642.

But was she here by 1640ish?

We need to decide if she should be in PGM or not. Thanks in advance for anyone who picks this up and gives me confirmation, one way or the other.

She was gone from Banham by 1641, so its likely that she was in New England by 1640. The identification isn't 100 certain, so if people would prefer to use PGM Adjunct that's understandable.

thanks M Cole. We'll leave it the standard PGM, not Adjunct. Good work here.
Entered marriage entry: her LNAB looks like "Camit." The final letter "t" appears to be crossed as that letter is generally.

Thanks for maintaining this profile!

I have a possible death date for Mary Canne Clarke in Dedham, MA in 1642. 22 May 1642 • Dedham, Norfolk, Massachusetts, USA

She did not appear in the 1641 Banham subsidy list so apparently emigrated between 1638 and 1641. From the existing NEHGR vol 152 source page 14 you have "At Dedham "our sister Clarke widdow being taken with strange fits of ye Collicke 21 day 3 month 1642 died in the evening that followed". Another source is "Boston County Transcripts 1620-1988 Town and City Clerks of Massachusetts. Massachusetts Vital and Town Records. Provo, UT: Holbrook Research Institute (Jay and Delene Holbrook)." on ancestry.com. Uploading the image of this source. Thanks!
